Pumpkin Predictions

Do you think that a large pumpkin has more seeds than a small one? This was a question that they started their pumpkin exploration with. Each of them made a prediction and explained their thinking. Did you know that your armspan is about the same length as your height? We found this interesting information out when we practiced measuring each other in both inches and centimeters.

You can find out by using an anemometer. This week we created another weather instrument to measure how fast the wind was blowing. The kids did a great job following directions and creating their own anemometers to measure wind speed.

Today we made some wind vanes! We wrote step-by-step directions for how to make wind vanes. The kids did a great job following directions, and making their weather instruments. Hopefully we will have some time to make some more in the near future!

Weather maps are everywhere! We spent both our math and science lessons today talking about weather maps! In math, we used comparison diagrams to complete comparison number stories. We paid close attention to terms like “difference” and “in all” to help us solve the problems. We used these skills to find the difference between high and low temperatures for certain cities. In science, we used our AWESOME new science books to read about weather, and what forms weather takes. We learned new weather words like precipitation and atmosphere. We also read about weather tools like anemometers, barometers, wind vanes and thermometers. Hopefully we will have some time to make some weather instruments in the next couple of weeks!

The kids have worked very diligently on their weather forecasts. I think that they are starting to look at the sky differently One of them actually commented today that it looked like a storm of hot dogs was moving in. We are finishing up writing forecasts, and will be writing our final weather forecast scripts to prepare for recording! Stay tuned for our deliciously great forecasts.

These are my thoughts on the Reading NECAP testing that they participated in this week. I am so proud of the children that I proctored during NECAP testing. They used all of the strategies that we have practiced and reviewed during the month of September. I saw a lot of rereading, and double-checking! I also saw a lot of pride in their faces as they completed them! Great work taking your time and doing your best! Keep up the good work next week during the Math sessions!
